The 15.7-mile route for the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Torch Relay has been finalized. Eighty torchbearers from Northeast Indiana will carry the Olympic flame through each of the city’s four quadrants on Thursday, January 3, 2002.
The city of Fort Wayne is honored to participate in this historic event that unites communities across the country with the spirit of the Olympics. I hope citizens take advantage of this rare opportunity to cheer on our torchbearers and to witness a moving, patriotic celebration here in Fort Wayne.
The Olympic Torch Relay will begin with a welcoming ceremony at 4:30p.m. on the front lawn of Paul Harding High School with the first torchbearer starting at 4:45p.m. I encourage everyone to line the route and attend the celebration.
Residents may line the route at any location, but the following rally points will have festivities and parking available at each point:
Paul Harding High School;
Bishop Luers High School;
Convention & Visitor’s Bureau;
North Side High School/Kelley Chevrolet;
Concordia High School;
Glenbrook Shopping Center; and Science Central.
The last torchbearer will carry the Olympic Flame into Headwaters Park at approximately 8p.m. and proceed with the official Lighting of the Cauldron ceremony. The 30-minute celebration includes the lighting ceremony, color guard presentation, local entertainment including the playing of the Olympic Torch Relay theme song as well as other music. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at Headwaters Park throughout the pre-celebration and celebration activities.
Pre-celebration activities will commence at 6 p.m. with several interactive trailers from national relay sponsors Coca-Cola and Chevrolet. Spectators can experience a virtual reality ski jump, hockey game and figure skating.
Please wear red, white and blue, bring flashlights and American flags or signs of support. I hope to see each of you celebrating this historic day.
Mayor Graham Richard
