The holiday season is usually a time for joy, celebration, and thankfulness for our blessings. I believe it is also a time of charity and goodwill – a time to remember the people in our community who have little or no income and struggle to provide basic necessities, not to mention Christmas gifts for their children. We at Wayne Township are doing what we can to help make this Christmas a happier holiday for our clients.
Every year, we adopt about thirty families in need and, through our partnership with the Allen County Christmas Bureau, provide them with gifts so they can have a nice Christmas. The Poor Relief and Outreach departments select the families, and with the assistance of our Workfare staff, the gifts are collected and distributed a week before Christmas. Thanks to all of our citizens who donated so generously to this worthy cause!
The Outreach department held its annual Christmas Dinner on December 14th for the residents of our homeless shelter and self-sufficiency program. Every year, Outreach supervisor Lois DaDa ensures that these families have a traditional Christmas dinner and an opportunity for fellowship. She invites Santa Clause, who gives the children a sense of hope and normalcy, as well as smiles and toys. This event is one of the best Christmas gifts we can give, and it is a very heartwarming event to attend. Merry Christmas, and have a safe and Happy New Year!
