Established through the foresight of civic leaders long gone, Lindenwood Cemetery is a well-known Fort Wayne Historic landmark, celebrating a 150th Anniversary.
Twelve civic-minded leaders of the community pulled their personal resources together to purchase the acreage. What started as 152 acres of marsh and dense underbrush is now a naturally-landscaped memorial grounds of over 175 acres. Lindenwood’s name was inspired by the abundance of Linden trees on the property.
The original 152 acres was purchased for a little over $7,000 with $3,000 for clearing the grounds, fencing, grading and engineering. With the work complete, dedication ceremonies were held May 30, 1860. Community members arrived in boats over the Wabash and Eric Canal from the city or by horse and carriage. At the conclusion of the dedication the first grave was sold for $5.
Though it is a community of the past, Lindenwood holds the heroic, the influential and the common man a place to rest together. Lindenwood continues to preserve the memories of those people in our lives we celebrate and remember. To better serve our families, Lindenwood shares a close affiliation with nine other Dignity Memorial providers in the Fort Wayne area.
Although no longer a place to arrive by boat or by horse, a place to arrive that holds our history.
Lindenwood Cemetery will celebrate their 150th Anniversary, on Sunday, May 30, 2010.
Sesquicentennial events include bagpipers, performances by the Voices of Unity Youth Choir, Keynote Speaker; John Beatty from the Genealogy Department of the Allen County Public Library, and the 30th Indiana Volunteer Infantry from Concordia Lutheran High School ROTC. All events are on the grounds of Lindenwood Cemetery, and will begin at 2:00 pm.
