On a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon, the University of St. Francis played their home opener. September 17th was the perfect day that brought out a plethora of students and fans to the Kevin Donley Field.
Pre-game began with Jim Shovlin-PA announcer for the Cougars-setting the stage. He announced, “At thousands of high schools, college and NFL games across the country, the Reagan Centennial National Football Coin Toss is honoring President Reagan. During the Centennial year of his life Ronald Reagan played football in high school and college and was a life long fan of the game. In commemoration of the Reagan Centennial, and in partnership with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, the University of Saint Francis honors President Reagan in today’s coin toss with the commemorative Reagan Centennial.
Joining us for this historic occasion are two of the Cougar’s greatest student-athletes, Brian Kurtz and Cory Jacquay.
In 2004, New Haven High School graduate Cory Jacquay became USF’s first –ever National Player of the Year. Cory’s record of 20 rushing touchdowns that season still stands as the most in USF history.
In 2005, Bishop Luer’s own, Brian Kurtz, received the same recognition as the National Player of the Year after starring at linebacker for the Cougars and totaling a school-record 133 tackles during that ’06 season.
Cory and Brian, along with all of the other Cougars who were nationally-recognized student-athletes, have helped build the Foundation for the Cougars football program and its unprecedented success.”
Kickoff was at high noon. The Cougars went on to win with a final score of 33-7 against McKendree University.
USF will resume play this Saturday, September 24 in Ann Arbor, Michigan against the Concordia University. Game time is 1pm. This will be the Mid-States Football Association Mideast League opener for both teams.
