90 YEARS YOUNG

90 Year young Marguerite Bashop celebrated her birthday on May 5th at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Powell on Winchester Road. Over sixty of her off-springs (spouses and families) enjoyed the festivities, food and games. Pictured is one of the five-generation. (Left to Right) Great-great grandson K. W. ELMHURST LITTLE LEAGUE

Some of you may remember the old Elmhurst Little League diamond that was located on Hayden Road, next to Elmhurst High School. The old little league diamond is now covered with asphalt and the Fort Wayne Community Schools bus fleet sits where the old ball diamond used to be. Of course Hayden Road is now Ardmore Avenue and the "new" Little League diamonds are now at the end of Mason Drive, just off Sandpoint Road. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Amie A. Arizmendi, daughter of Valeria S. and Stephen R. Petrisko of 3511 Dalevue Drive, Waynedale, recently returned from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Enduring Freedom while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, home ported in Norfolk, Virginia.

Armed Forces Day, which is celebrated on the third Saturday in May (May 19 this year) is actually a combination of five major observances. In 1947, President Harry S. Truman proclaimed that Army Day, April 6; Navy Day, October 27 (also the birthday of Theodore Roosevelt); Air Force Day, the second Saturday in September; founding of the Marine Corps, November 10; and Coast Guard Day, August 4, would all be marked on the same day and hence forth be known as Armed Forces Day.

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN

Thursday, April 18, was a warm cloudy day, a beautiful day for baseball. When I got to the Elmhurst baseball diamond, It was Elmhurst nothing, Dwenger nothing. This warm snap had brought the people out in droves. Both the visitor and home stands were almost full to capacity. Many of the male spectators were milling around on the sidelines, too edgy to sit in the bleachers, each rooting for their team and for their son.

There's just something special about baseball. Maybe it's a carryover...
