Coach Norfleet prepares for new season at Elmhurst.

The Waynedale News stopped by Elmhurst High School on Friday morning, July 26, to talk to new football coach, Roosevelt D. Norfleet Jr.

The first stop was at the new Athletic Directors office, to pick up some stats. Julie Hollingsworth, the new AD provided me with the recent history on the Elmhurst Football Team. The numbers were not encouraging. The last win for Elmhurst was against Concordia High School back in 1996.

HILLSDALE COLLEGE

Nathan Conroy, a Freshman, Biology major at Hillsdale College was named to the 2002 spring semester Dean's list with a 3.4 GPA. Nathan is also a member of the Hillsdale College golf team and pep band. Nathan is the son of Jim and Rita Conroy of Yoder, Indiana and is a 2001 graduate of Bishop Luers High School. He is also a member of St. Therese parish here in Waynedale. Hillsdale College is located at 33 E. College Street Hillsdale, Michigan.

Top Prize “Code Talkers” Blanket will be raffled off at the Mihsihkinaahkwa Powwow in Columbia City.  Fort Wayne’s Pendleton Store in Covington Plaza donated this Indian Blanket. (L-R) Marine Lance Corporal Joe Tippmann (son of Powwow committee member Dani Tippmann) and Pendleton Store Manager Debbie Hallett present blanket.

This is the 3rd year that the Fort Wayne Pendleton Store located in Covington Plaza on West Jefferson St. has donated one of their famous 100% wool Indian Blankets to the Mihsihkinaahkwa Powwow. Pendleton Blankets are frequently sought by collectors and are valued for their beauty as well as their warmth and durability. Oliver, Olin, and Martin Lakes Canoe Trip

Saturday, August 3rd

Starting at the public access site on Oliver Lake, we will canoe through Olin (one of the largest undeveloped lakes in Indiana) and then Martin (where ACRES has the 5-acre Martin Lake Nature Preserve) to a cute little pond called Smith. Olin Lake has a fen along its north shore, which we will visit. Come out for a fun day!

A LETTER FROM THE POE, INDIANA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

 

Dear Friends,

On August 23 and 24, 2002, the Poe Volunteer Fire Department will be holding their 64th Annual Fireman's Festival. This is our main fund-raiser for the year. We turn to fund-raising to help cover the increasing costs of training and operations. Our funds are acquired by township contracts, donations, and fund-raisers.

St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Yoder, will host its annual Summerfest on Saturday, Aug. 10, and Sunday, August 11. Summerfest is an annual parish fund-raiser and includes activities for all ages.

New this year will be a round and square dance on Saturday featuring Heartland II from 7 to 10 p.m. in the parish activity center. Cost of the dance is $5 per person or $15 per family. Snacks and beverages will be available.

THE NOELS CELEBRATE THEIR 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

 

Bennett and Pat Noel will celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary with several family activities. Bennett and Pat were classmates in Garrett High School and graduated in the same class. They were married on August 29, 1952 in Auburn, Indiana and have lived in the Waynedale area since 1953.

Bennett retired from the Air National Guard at Baer Field and Pat retired from the Lincoln National Life Insurance Company. They enjoy traveling...

VETERANS' OFFICER RECEIVES AMERICANISM AWARD

The Allen County Council of Veterans presented its 2002 Americanism Award to George Jarboe, Allen County Veterans' Service Officer. Jarboe received the award during the Council of Veterans' Americanism Awards Banquet, held on Friday, July 26, 2002, at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. He received the award from Roy Allison, past commander of the Allen County Council.
