Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Amie A. Arizmendi, daughter of Valeria S. and Stephen R. Petrisko of 3511 Dalevue Drive, here in Waynedale, is halfway through a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Enduring Freedom while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, home ported in Norfolk, Virginia.

Mike and Cathy Andrews, (2502 Sandpoint Rd.), began working in Worcester, South Africa in 1998. During their time there, Mike worked to help administrate the Kibbutz El Shamah, a Christ-centered community center. His plan of helping is through preaching, prayer, counseling, mentoring, and helping with practical needs.

There are approximately 20 street kids who have accepted Christ in the Kibbutz community. Mike and Cathy plan on returning to build a home for these homeless kids.

The ground breaking for the St. Therese Parish new church is slated for Palm Sunday, March 24th. It will take place following the 11:30am Mass (12:45pm).

Before this date there will be some preliminary work done by the contractors, Michael Kinder and sons Construction Company.

The one block section of road vacated by the city council, formerly known as Liberty Drive, will be closed to through traffic by early March. Construction will continue for about one year.

With Mt. Calvary's new Family Life Center reaching completion soon, the Preschool is ready to expand it's ministries, as more space has become available. A new class for two-year-olds is being offered for the 2002-2003 school year, and is the only one available in the immediate Waynedale area.

Mizpah Shriners and The Scottish-Rite will once again host a Saint Patrick's Day Parade. This will be co-sponsored again this year by WLDE 101.7 FM & Miller Lite. The parade will begin at 4pm Sunday March 17, 2002 on the corners of Wayne & Fairfield Avenue, East to Harrison Street, North to Berry Street, and West on Berry to Fairfield Avenue following the Green Line in the center of all the streets on the parade route.

The IUPU Student Activities Board will hold an "Old School Hip Hop" Concert March 23 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The Waynedale News caught up with Amanda Perez on Tuesday. Amanda had just returned to Waynedale after doing a benefit concert Saturday in San Diego. The concert was held to raise awareness and money in the case of kidnap victim, Danielle VanDam. Amanda finished the San Diego concert and then came back to Waynedale to begin preparing for an upcoming concert at the Memorial Coliseum. The concert (The Big Schizzo) will happen on February 21st and is being sponsored by WJFX-FM/HOT 107.9
