L-R Larry Thiele Commander Post 296, John Moody Past Post Commander 296, Ron Kaiser 4th District Commander and Manuel Fernandez 3rd Vice Commander 296 along with 9 elementary schools (St. Aloysius, Pleasant Center, LaFayette Central, Maplewood, Unity Lutheran, St. Paul Lutheran, Lindley, St. Joseph/St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, and South Wayne) were represented during the Flag Etiquette Contest.

On March 18, 2003 an award ceremony was held for the winners of a Flag Etiquette Contest held at American Legion Post 296, Tillman Road, Fort Wayne.

There were a total of 397 4th graders that participated from 9 elementary schools and two winners were announced. Guests included principles, teachers, parents, officers and board members, as well as winners from each school. The Flag Etiquette Ceremony was followed with a pizza party. It was a full house at Lafayette Jefferson High School in Lafayette, Indiana. Unfortunately about two thirds of the crowd were wearing Gary Roosevelt gold instead of Elmhurst red and gray. Gary Roosevelt, was the #1 high school basketball team in the state and they have a huge fan base. They had hoped to eliminate Elmhurst from the Semi-State tournament and go on to Conseco Fieldhouse to win a state championship ring.

Unit 384 Officers prepare for final sendoff on Monday, March 17, 2003 during their working lunch at Azars Restaurant.

Across the country, military families and friends reacted to the start of war with a mix of fear and hope that their loved ones would soon return. On Saturday, March 15th, Sunday 16th, and Monday 17th Azars Restaurant in Waynedale welcomed hundreds of men and women from Unit 384 Reserve, a company that is headquartered here in Fort Wayne. These heroes are from the Military Police and Medic Units. They were mobilized on March 15th and moved out at noon on Tuesday, March 18th.

Congratulations to the Elmhurst Trojan Varsity Bowling Team. They successfully defended their regional championship title on Saturday, March 22nd at Cooper's Sport Bowl in Anderson, IN.

Team members include: Keith Johnson, Cesar Guzman, Justin Harper, Brian Byanskie, Steven Croghan, Alex Dawson, and Wilbert Rowald.

Several Waynedale residents are members of Memorial Park Middle School's Jazz Band known as "Big Noise!" Big Noise has been invited to participate in North Texas Jazz Festival in Addison, Texas on April 4-6th. Auditions were by compact disc recordings or videotapes and Memorial Park's musicians were the only middle school jazz band in the United States selected to participate.
