SOAP BOX DERBY FAMILY TRADITION CONTINUES

Details LOCAL WINNER-KALENE POWELL

Eleven year old Kalene Powell continues the family tradition by being the local winner of the Stock division Soap Box Derby race held in Goshen, IN on Saturday, June 15th. She was one of 36 boys and girls who competed in this race in Goshen. She will join over 425 other local Champs and 100 Rally Champs from all over the world to compete in the 65th All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio on Saturday, July 27th.

TRUCKFEST RETURNS TO AUBURN, INDIANA

 

After an unbelievably successful inaugural year, the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival TruckFest is back. The second annual TruckFest is expected to be even bigger and better than last year. "The Festival was thrilled with the outcome of the first annual event and anticipates the number of trucks to at least double this year," said TruckFest 2002 Chairman Todd Esterline.

Dr. Marcia Sauter, Vice President for Academic Affairs at USF, has announced students named to the Dean's List for the Spring 2002 semester. These students have maintained a 3.5 grade point average on a four-point scale and have carried at least 12 credit hours.

Area students on the Dean's List are: Bethany Lockwood majoring in Nursing and Jennifer N. Weachock majoring in Education (Visual Arts).

LORENA’S WISH COMES TRUE

Every year about 200 wishes come true for children in Indiana. Lorena, age 14 of Waynedale, was granted her most favorite wish, to visit Disney World.

You see, for many children, attending school, playing in the backyard, and running through a sprinkler on hot summer days are done with little effort. But for Lorena, diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, energy is low and optimism is not so promising. It is for kids like Lorena that MAKE-A-WISH Foundation of Indiana comes into play.

ON LOCATION BEAR LAKE CANADA,

Details Greg Scott and John Jr. show three Northern caught on Stony Lake.  The Northern Pike have a double row of Y bones that require a special fillet technique.  These fish provided a fine Thursday evening meal for the camp.

The best way to get to Bear Lake from Fort Wayne is to go north to the Soo Locks, then east 150 miles to Lang Lake. Then take a boat ride 18 miles through four sets of narrows to Bear Lake. After arriving this spring, there were chores to do. The water intake pipe needed to be placed out in the lake and water pumped into the head tank. It's nice to know there are still places where you can pull your drinking water right out of the lake.

On Thursday, May 30, 2002 the Elmhurst Trojans played in the second game of the Division 3A Sectional after receiving a bye for the first game. The games were played at Indiana Tech and the Trojans were matched up with long-time rivals, the Wayne Generals, who also received a bye. Steve Purdy started out the game by pitching for the Trojans and with excellent defense behind him the score was 6-5 after the sixth. Mike Ybarra came in and closed, earning him a save for the game. Rev. Gary Miller was installed as the senior pastor of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 1819 Reservation Drive, on Sunday, June 9, 2002. Presiding at the installation was Rev. Arnold Piering, pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne and counselor for the Fort Wayne South Circuit.

VILLA OF THE WOODS DEDICATION

On Tuesday, June 18, 2002 the newly renovated and expanded facility for Older Adults, Villa of the Woods, 5610 Noll Avenue was dedicated with Bishop John M. D'Arcy presiding.

Villa of the Woods is a licensed residential living facility serving older adults and participates in the State of Indiana Medicaid Room and Board Assistance Program.
