ARMED FORCES DAY IS COMBINATION OF OBSERVANCES

Armed Forces Day, which is celebrated on the third Saturday in May (May 19 this year) is actually a combination of five major observances. In 1947, President Harry S. Truman proclaimed that Army Day, April 6; Navy Day, October 27 (also the birthday of Theodore Roosevelt); Air Force Day, the second Saturday in September; founding of the Marine Corps, November 10; and Coast Guard Day, August 4, would all be marked on the same day and hence forth be known as Armed Forces Day.

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN

Thursday, April 18, was a warm cloudy day, a beautiful day for baseball. When I got to the Elmhurst baseball diamond, It was Elmhurst nothing, Dwenger nothing. This warm snap had brought the people out in droves. Both the visitor and home stands were almost full to capacity. Many of the male spectators were milling around on the sidelines, too edgy to sit in the bleachers, each rooting for their team and for their son.

I want to ask for your help. Could I get some coverage for a huge project I am involved in as Vice President for the PTA at Pleasant Center Elementary School. They had not had an update to their playground for over 25 years and in 2001, the PTA set a goal to buy new equipment and have it installed. Explorer Post 2868, the Youth Career Exploration program of the IN Air National Guard was named "Explorer Post of the Year" for the 2001-2002 year at the annual Exploring and Venturing Awards dinner.
