"Every Heart Beats True for the Red White and Blue - Old Glory"

On June 3, 2004, essay awards were presented at Benoit Academy, 3029 E. Paulding Road. The 7th and 8th grade students participated. The winner was Alicia R. Lopez. Americanism Chairman, David Parrish Unit 296, Legion Women's Auxiliary, Helen Thiele presented the award.

On June 9, 2004, David Parrish American Legion Post #296 held an award ceremony for S. Sergeant Marion (Toots) Hunter, who is a WWII veteran. He was presented a Bronze Star by Nicholas Wall, representing Senator Richard Lugar's office in Indianapolis.

Girl Scouts and Brownies from Troops 904, 394, 850 and 704 recited the Girl Scout Promise as they marched in the Waynedale Memorial Day Parade. The girls and leaders wore the following names of deceased veterans: Elvin Winchester, William Workman, Robert Hunter, Michael Brase, Clay Landrum, Donald Shaw, John A. Dahman, Arthur Dieckman, Paul Evans, Jack Hoffman, Richard Brase, Bruce Shafer, George Malcom, Dennis Messman, Norbert Pieper, John Hogan, Richard Gamble, and Elmer Starry.

By now, most kids have begun their summer vacation.‑ The pools are open, and the parks are teeming with children eager to get dirty.‑ Unfortunately, summer also signifies the beginning of what experts call the "trauma season."‑ Tragedies peak during the summer months because children are supervised less and engage in more outdoor activities.

Agnes (Beard) Hughes was born in Portland, Indiana on June 16, 1904. Her father was an engineer and drove the line between Delphis and Lima. Her grandparents knew the Wright Brothers, and allowed them to build some of their airplanes in their barn in Plymouth, Ohio.

Agnes family moved to Fort Wayne when she was fourteen and other than a few years in Florida, she has been here ever since.
