"The Good Shepherd", a bronze sculpture created by esteemed local artist Hector Garcia was unveiled and dedicated on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at The Rescue Mission (301 W. Superior St., Fort Wayne).

Garcia recently donated the piece, which depicts Jesus with a staff and a lamb. The piece will be mounted in the Mission's front entry to greet residents and guests as they arrive.

The Waynedale Church of the Nazarene began meeting in 1939 in a house located at 6902 Bradbury Avenue, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Rev. V. L McSherry served as its pastor in Waynedale. Raymond Fairfield, Floyd Hapner and DeWitt Kiester were elected trustees at the first meeting held on September 3, 1939. Loree Pickard served as church secretary.

Puting-On-The-Ritz

Billed as An Evening of Cool Jazz and Smooth Standards, "PUTTIN' ON THE RITZ FOR RILEY," features popular vocalist Shannon Persinger backed by The Eric Clancy Trio. The concert, scheduled for Friday, September 26th at Roanoke's Cottage Event Center, is a fundraiser for Riley Hospital for children.

Book-Donation

On August 11th a generous young man donated two large boxes of books to the Waynedale Elementary School. Gerald Martin IV, eleven years old was moving to Titusville, FL and wanted to share the books, many new, with other children.

Gerald's grandmother, Linda Shelton, and his aunt, Brittany Vollen, took the books to the school. The ladies in the office of Waynedale Elementary were more than happy to accept such a wonderful gift for their library.

The Home Depot® Foundation announced a $86,700 grant to Indianapolis based Volunteers of America of Indiana, to address the critical housing needs of U.S. military veterans. This grant is part of $1.795 million in grants announced for 10 Volunteers of America homeless veterans programs in eight states. On August 16, Bishop Kevin Rhoades, Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, visited Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton parish to celebrate Mass and to bless the new educational wing. The wing was constructed this past year for the opening of the new Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton School, as well as the start of the school year for the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Religious Education classes.

A travel log of my family’s trip to the eastern U.S. on what I have called “The History Tour”. Our first stop, with my husband Wes and my 6-year old son Isaac, was Gettysburg. Seated with President Lincoln is Isaac.

For our family vacation this year, I wanted to travel east to see some American history first hand.
