DELAGRANGE FAMILY WELCOMES HIGH SCHOOL EXCHANGE STUDENT FROM JAPAN

The Delagrange family of Fort Wayne has qualified to host Yumiko Tochigi, a student from Japan who will be attending R. Nelson Snider High School for the 2003-04 school year.

Yumiko has met all the academic and character qualifications necessary to be accepted as an exchange student by World Heritage, and the Delagrange family is eagerly awaiting Yumiko's arrival in August.

World Heritage, a non-profit, public benefit organization dedicated to fostering cultural enrichment and intercultural understanding through youth exchange, provides students from Spain, Mexico, France, Germany, Great Britain, Thailand, Brazil, and Japan the opportunity to spend a year in the United States. The students live as members of American families, while attending our local high schools to acquire knowledge of and appreciation for American life, language, and culture.

Recognizing Alumni In The Military

Wayne High School wishes to recognize WHS alumni, which are presently serving in the military. WHS request that readers send a short letter to Air Force Junior ROTC at WHS if they are aware of anyone who is presently serving in the military, any branch, and at any location. The letter should provide as much information as possible about the service person's full name and address. A picture and short biography would be very helpful. CANTERBURY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT RECEIVES BURGER KING SCHOLARS AWARD

Quality dining, Inc. announced today that Canterbury High School student Rachel Kantner will receive a Burger King Scholars Award for continuing education. To qualify for a scholarship a high school senior must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA, work part-time, be involved in co-curricular and /or community services activities, and demonstrate financial need. "We are thrilled to honor hard-working students with a Burger King Scholars Award said Gerald O. Fitzpatrick, Senior Vice-President of Burger King Operations at Quality Dining, Inc., and Rachel Kantner is a worthy recipient of the scholarships based on her academic achievements, community service, and part-time employment."

 

LOCAL STUDENT PARTICIPATES IN DEBATE

Andrea Coltrain of Fort Wayne participated in the 17th annual Christ College Freshman Debates April 10 on the campus of VU. The debates were conducted by freshmen in the University's honors college. Andrea Coltrain argued for the proposition that "The state of Indiana will extend the benefits, protections, and responsibilities of legal marriage to same-sex couples through a system of civil unions." She was also the coach of her team. Andrea Coltrain, a freshman at VU, is majoring in communication in the College of Arts and Sciences. She is a 2002 graduate of Elmhurst High School and is the daughter of Thomas and Jean Coltrain of Fort Wayne.

 

LOCAL STUDENT PARTICIPATES IN DEBATE

Brandon Arnold of Woodburn participated in the 17th annual Christ College Freshman Debates April 3 on the campus of VU. Brandon argued against the proposition that VU should participate in Division III rather than Division I athletics." Brandon, a freshman majoring in meteorology in the College of Arts and Sciences is a 2002 graduate of Bishop Luers High School and is the son of Douglas and Regina Arnold of Woodburn.

 

TAYLOR UNIVERSITY FORT WAYNE CAMPUS

TUFWC will hold their commencement exercises on Saturday, May 24, 2003 at 3pm in the Gerig Activities Center. Sixty-seven young men and women will receive bachelor's and associate's degrees from the University. Featured speaker for commencement will be Mr. Ravi Zacharias, president of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries.

Travel to Mexico With USF

Dan Strayer, Spanish Professor at USF, is planning a two-week trip to Cuenavaca, Mexico, for students and the general public. The group will depart Friday, May 9, 2003 from Fort Wayne and return on Friday, May 23. The cost of the trip is approximately $1,200, and includes airfare, two weeks of Spanish language training, meals, and lodging with a host family. Several side trips are planned, including travel to Mexico City. Participants also have the chance to earn college credit in Spanish equivalent to an entire semester of instruction.
