Long-time Waynedale area Scouter Ray McCune and Associate Editor of the Waynedale News was honored recently for his many years of service to the Anthony Wayne Area Boy Scout Council. McCune was one of 29 Scout volunteers recognized at the annual Miami District Recognition Dinner held Sunday, April 7, 2002 at the new AWAC Volunteer Resource Center. He was one of three Scouters to receive the Council Patch, which is presented to volunteers who have completed a great service to our youth in Scouting. Nominees are judged on a variety of criteria, including participation in district and council functions, program operations, and sincerity of motivation and objective. McCune's contributions to Boy Scouts were noted during the presentation.
The presentation read as such:
"Our next recipient has given long service to scouting, first as a boy, then as a parent of boy scouts and most recently as a scoutmaster, a chartered organization representative and committee member...and all the while seeking no award or recognition for it. He is the founding Scoutmaster of Troop 38 in the early 90's and funded the young troop himself through yard sales and other fundraisers. Most recently he stepped in to help a struggling Troop 44 as a committee member and assistant scoutmaster. This Scouter has also single handedly promoted scouting in the community through a regular column called SCOUTING SMOKE SIGNALS, and through other articles about local Scouts and Scouting events in The Waynedale News. He mentions and writes about the Boy Scouts in his monthly column in Midwest Outdoors magazine called KAMPFIRE KOOKIN'. Oh, and this person is also testament that one can be very well fed cooking over the campfire. In fact, last year this person won 1st Place in Scouting Magazine's 'Great Taste in Camp Cooking' contest with his World Famous Bread Puddin' dessert recipe. Scouting magazine is the main magazine for Boy Scout Leaders with a circulation of 1,000,000."
