NEED A LITTLE SPICE IN YOUR LIFE?

Details
Text Size:

Try the GREAT AMERICAN SPICE COMPANY. The world's largest spice store is located in Fort Wayne, IN at 628 Leesburg Road (corner of Leesburg and Main in the former Wayne Feed Mill).

This is no ordinary spice store. Whatever it is that you are looking for, they've got it – better, fresher, and cheaper. 30-40% cheaper. For instance, Durkee brand Parsley, found at a local grocery store, would cost $2.97 for 1/4 oz ($11.88 per ounce or $190 per pound). You can purchase an entire pound for just $9.65 at Great American Spice Company. That is 15 cents for 1/4 pound.

Over 2000 items are on display in this outlet center. Everything from hard to find candy fixin's to hunters specials, such as sausage making supplies and preservatives. They have 245 hot sauces. Some are so hot you need to be over 18 and sign a release waiver to purchase them. A hot sauce product called Acid Rain Sauce is known to burn the skin off the roof of your mouth. Batch #37 Hot Sauce has 4 -flames. The bottle reads, "There is a point where pleasure and pain intersect. A doorway to a new dimension on sensual euphoria. Where fire both burns and soothes. Carrots and Habanero peppers along with garlic, mustard seeds, onions, olive oil and citrus juices are blended together to create Pain is Good!" Batch #114 Jamaican Hot Sauce, another 4-flamer, reads, "In the jungles of Jamaica there is a small shack. In the shack, Jerk Sauce is made from Scotch Bonnet and Habanero peppers. In the mouths of those who eat it, a strange voodoo begins to take hold. In this bottle is that sauce." Popcorn and popcorn seasonings, exotic beans, soup and gravy mixes, salsas, mustards, BBQ sauces, rubs and marinades, flavorings and oils, not to mention spices that you can't find in most stores like green peppercorn, crystallized ginger, and vanilla powder can be found here.

If you've got questions, Chef Judy is available most of the time. Just give her a call at (888) 502-8058 and she (or one of her assistants) will take care of you. If you'd rather write to Chef Judy, that's okay too. Just send an e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and she'll get right back to you.

There are three ways to order their spices, gravies and soup mixes, hot sauces, popcorn seasonings, flavorings and dehydrated produce. Call them at (888) 502-8058, Monday through Friday between 7:30am and 5:30pm, log on to www.americanspice.com where you can place your order 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or simply drive over to Leesburg Road and check out the world's largest spice store.

Just like high school, some things are more popular than others. The Great American Spice Company has rounded up the most popular. Your favorites. The ones no cook can live without. Just look for the exclamation point to find the best of the best.

P.S. Mrs. Waynedale,

You might be able to "tame" Wayne, your tubby-hubby with some of our hot sauces.
