STUDENTS AT ST. THERESE “TP” THE SCHOOL

Details
Text Size:

The children of St. Therese Catholic School, 2220 Lower Huntington Road, were asked by their church's St. Vincent de Paul Society to have a one-day collection of paper products for the SVDP food bank. Principal Chuck Grimm and the teachers decided instead to make a Lenten project of the request.

The students were challenged to gather 500 lbs. of paper throughout the forty days of Lent! A four-pack of TP weighs about a pound.

After Mr. Grimm and the SVDP president explained to the children that people receiving food assistance from the state cannot buy any paper products, including toilet tissue, with their food cards, the students went to work.

As they brought in their donations, each classroom had to total the weight of their paper (math!) and turn in the amount to the school office. Two weeks into Lent they had already reached their 500 lbs. goal. They offered the entire parish a chance to help as well and some of the children will go shopping for TP with the money the adults contribute.

They decided to try for 1000 pounds before Holy Week/Spring Break!

On Friday, March 30, beginning at 1:30 PM, all 195 St. Therese students in Pre-K through grade 8 will process across the parish campus, from the school to the food bank, carrying what they HOPE will be 1000 pounds of paper products for the 150 or more Waynedale families served by the St. Vincent de Paul Society food bank every month. The kids will stack the paper, weather permitting, on the pantry's driveway so they can see what 1000 lbs of paper products look like.  (Note: as of 3/16 their total is 762#)

The classroom with the most paper by weight will probably get a pizza lunch as a treat.
