HERE’S TO YOUR HEALTH

Details Father Ed Dowling

In the last issue of Here's To Your Health we quoted a theologian (Dr. Sam Shoemaker) who contributed greatly to AA's beginning. It would be an oversight if we failed to mention another theologian who became Bill Wilson's sponsor from the time they met in 1940. Bill met Father Ed Dowling shortly after him and his wife Lois had been evicted from their home for being unable to make the payments. Bill said he could remember their first meeting as if it were yesterday:

One winter night in 1940...

...does tooth loss double your risk of stroke?

Dear Dr. Reichwage,

I read your column about periodontal disease and how it can cause heart attacks. I'm wondering if I should be worried because of my mom's situation. She is 67 and had periodontal disease for years, but she refused to get help. About 10 years ago, her teeth were pulled and she wears dentures. Even though she is not that old, she has had heart attacks and several mild strokes.

HERE’S TO YOUR HEALTH

Details Dr. Sam Shoemaker

HERE’S TO YOUR HEALTH

Details Dr. Harry M. Tiebout, Psychiatrist

Here's To Your Health has already paid tribute to doctors who heavily influenced Alcoholics Anonymous, and this week I will quote Dr. Harry M. Tiebout, Psychiatrist: "It was from Bill Wilson that I heard the need for alcoholics to hit bottom, of the necessity for accepting a higher power, of the indispensability of humility. These ideas had never crossed my professional horizon and certainly had never influenced my thinking or attitudes. Revolutionary as they were, they nevertheless made...

HERE’S TO YOUR HEALTH

Details Dr. Zweig

Last week's, "Here's To Your Health," mentioned Jack Anderson's 1941 "Saturday Evening Post," article titled, "Alcoholics Anonymous," 1941 was also the beginning of another doctor's story who was no less a "medical saint," to area alcoholics than Dr. Bob was to Akron alcoholics.

During 1941 Dr Zweig (who was not an alcoholic) worked at a private practice on Berry Street in Fort Wayne where an Army colonel came to visit and asked him and other doctors to attend a war bond promotion at Fort...
