HERE'S TO YOUR HEALTH: DAVES STORY PART V

Details

The week's HTYH is a continuation of Dave's story: I asked an A.A. man to be my sponsor and after we reviewed the first three steps and said the Third Step prayer together, I started on my 4th Step inventory list. He wrote fear at the top of the first page, resentment at the top of the second page and sex at the top of the third page. He asked me to spend 15 minutes each night meditating. I was supposed to start writing even if I didn't believe it would work. At the top of the "fear" page he...

A HEALTHY DAY: EBB AND FLOW

Details DR. JAMES NILL

Ancient peoples closely observed and interacted with the rhythms of their immediate environment. The sun rose in the East and set in the West. Day followed night, and approximately 12 hours later night followed day. The seasons progressed through a more leisurely, although no less regular, rhythm. A season of rebirth and new growth followed a season of restriction and retrenchment. A season of increasing sunshine, longer days, and bounteous expansion was succeeded by a season of harvest...

HERE'S TO YOUR HEALTH: DAVES STORY PART IV

This weeks HTYH is a continuation of Dave's story: My counselor asked me, "David where are you right now?"

"I'm sitting in a treatment center," I answered, "Because I tried to kill myself."

"Where's your mother right now?" she asked.

"David, it seems to me your mother's life is going pretty good but yours isn't. You look down your nose at her because she's not educated and you're...

THE NEXT TEN YEARS

What does the future hold in store? None of us can know with certainty, although some predictions are possible. Stock market indexes will rise. Then they'll fall. Then everyone will hope that the indexes will rise again. Hemlines will fall. Then they'll rise. Then in two or three years they'll fall again.

The French have a saying for all this - plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. The more things change, the more they stay the same. In fact, things have changed a lot...

HERE'S TO YOUR HEALTH: DAVES STORY PART III

Details

This week's HTYH is a continuation of Dave's story: We lived on a farm outside of Raleigh, North Carolina. We raised pigs and chickens and the feed came in large white cloth bags with strawberries, flowers, and green stems printed on them. My mother saved those bags and, when she got the time, she cut and sewed shirts from them for my brother and I. They didn't look manly to us and although it took lot of work to make them--we never appreciated them. I scoffed at them and called them pig-feed...

A HEALTHY DAY: CAN WORK BE RELAXING?

Details

CAN WORK BE RELAXING?

Not too many people would agree that "oh, yeah, my work is relaxing". For most of us, work involves plenty of stress. If we're in customer service, there's always a seemingly never-ending stream of customers with an abundance of problems that need to be handled yesterday. If we work in an office, office politics adds an unnecessary layer of stress to the normal daily stress of the work we're supposed to be doing. If we work for ourselves, there's the ongoing stress of...
