HERE'S TO YOUR HEALTH: LARRY'S STORY PART III

Details

This week's HTYH is a continuation of Larry's story: For the next 13 years I was the starting linebacker for the New York Jets. We drank a lot of whiskey and beer. If we weren't playing football, we were drinking-that was our second job. In 1961 I got a phone call and my Dad had passed away at the age of fifty. When I got home, all I heard was how great a man my Dad was. How he had taken care of other people, and how he knew no racial boundaries when that was not normal in Mississippi. On the...

A HEALTHY DAY: FIVE SMALL MEALS

Details DR. JAMES NILL

Plenty of people go through plenty of suffering trying to lose weight. But why does it have to be that way? Surely there's some discipline involved, but the process can actually be empowering and personally fulfilling. Weight loss doesn't need to be about suffering. Losing weight can actually be fun.

HERE'S TO YOUR HEALTH: LARRY'S STORY PART II

Details

This weeks HTYH is a continuation of Larry's story: I can remember to this moment how I felt after I took that first drink of wine. It burned a little and I shivered, got flushed all over, my toes curled up and my stomach felt like I had swallowed an umbrella and it opened up. I poured some more and before the end of the evening, I exhibited all the classic symptoms of alcoholism--they were already present in my life...

Now, the role of insulin is very detailed but in a nutshell it goes like this; the pancreas releases insulin, which travels through the vascular system and to different tissues of the body. When insulin reaches these tissues (liver, muscle...

HERE'S TO YOUR HEALTH: LARRY'S STORY PART I

Details

This is the beginning of Larry's story: I come from the land of southern hospitality. All I ever wanted from this world was to be accepted and treated like a real person. The old timers in AA promised that if I stuck with this program, I could walk down the street with dignity and look people in the eye, no matter where I lived. I used to live in Arkansas until the day I looked around and realized that everybody was carrying an AK 47 except me. Soon after that, my wife and I moved to...

A HEALTHY DAY: STRONG BONES ARE HEALTHY BONES

Details DR. JAMES NILL

As with the rest of our physical selves, we don't think about our bones until something goes wrong. Bones are just there, under the surface and unseen, normally never taking up space in our conscious thought processes. Trauma, of course, can injure a bone. But in most circumstances a bone bruise or a fracture heals on its own in due course. You might need a brace, sling, or cast to protect the bone while it's rebuilding, but within four to six weeks everything is back to normal.

On the other...
