Dear Cousin,
A summer thunderstorm swept over our hills at dusk last night, bringing much needed moisture to the lawns and gardens. The sultry heat was banished, as the wind blew away the last vestige of the sun-scorched day. The garden crops greedily drank in the life-giving moisture as the rain continued to soak the ground.
The corn blades have been curled up for days in order to conserve every precious drop of dew and channel it toward the roots. Today they are green and flat as the roots...

Growing up a Waynedale Kid

I was going to give you some more dandy Derby recipes but our editor is doing Waynedale stories this time and I was requested to submit my two cents worth.

I'm a firm believer in the Scouting program in our town/county/state/nation/world. It is one deterrent that we have against crime. Train the youth right and maybe they won't go astray after they grow up. I know there are former Boy Scouts in prison and even Eagle Scouts that have been in trouble with the law. But for the most part and I would say a very high percentage, boys that come through the Scouting program are a cut above the rest of the boys who just like to 'hang around', go to...

1 dozen eggs


1 tbsp. Salt

1 tbsp. Sugar

pinch of salt


1 Ziploc bag


Put 'cold' eggs in a pan and cover with 'cold' water. Add a pinch of salt. Set on stove and slowly bring the water to a rolling boil. Let boil for 1 or 2 minutes. Cover pan and set aside for 20 minutes. Eggs will cook and the yolks will not turn dark. Pour off water and fill pan with cold water and cool eggs completely....

Corona Borealis , The Northern Crown


A small constellation that can be recognized by its distinctive shape rather than its brightness is Corona Borealis (kor-OH-nah bor-ee-AL-iss). It is also known as the Northern Crown and has been acknowledged through the ages by many different civilizations.
