THE NINE MILE UMC LADIES AID AND THEIR 1906 QUILT - AROUND THE FRAME

Details The crazy quilt made by the Ladies Aid members of the Nine Mile UMC church stands as a testament to the ladies who created it over a century ago.

It was February 7, 1906 when the women members of the Nine Mile United Methodist Church met at the home of Mrs. Levan to organize and adopt the constitution for their aid society.

The original neatly written constitution states:
I.We agree to organize ourselves into a band of Christian workers to be known as the "Ladies Aid of Liberty Class". The object being to aid in the work of the church both temporal and spiritual.

II.The officers shall consist of a President, Secretary, Treasurer and two...

With Valentine's Day upon us, you might be looking for a story of true love, a love that lasts longer than a couple's first argument; or at least lasts beyond the few weeks of a much-hyped reality show about bachelors and bachelorettes. Well, I've got a good one for you.

Frederick and Elizabeth Noble got married on New Year's Day, 1941. It was a quick ceremony, as Frederick was on a 48-hour leave from his British Tank Regiment. It was World War II, of course, and Frederick's absence would be a...

A MOTIVATIONAL TEACHER

Details

I stopped after class to talk with my teacher, Coach Sam. I was going to the state wrestling tournament and would be missing a big quiz in my U.S. History class. I asked him if I could make it up when I returned, or if he wanted me to take it before I left.

"I'll tell you what," he said. "If you win, I'll let you make it up when you get back."

I was a junior and had worked really hard in wrestling. I had won the district championship, but was looking at some tough competition at state. I knew...

FRUITCAKES - SCHINDLER SEZ

A verbal agreement isn't worth the paper it's written on.

Toronto can't a-Ford him
Rob Ford, mayor of Toronto, admitted smoking crack cocaine. He also admitted he had a drinking problem. When asked if would resign he said, after an (expletive deleted) tirade, "I'm not perfect..."

Well, Mr. Ford, it's apparent to everyone that you're no Henry! It also seems you've got more problems than Obama, which I doubt if either of you will ever be able to solve.

Where are they when you when I need them?...

BIRTHING BABIES

Details

Making my usual pastoral rounds at the local hospital some time ago, I witnessed the most unusual of circumstances. A dilapidated Buick had jumped the parking lot curb and had crash-landed in the flower garden just outside the main doors. The driver's door was wide open, and a group of hurried and harried medical staff was doing something to someone in the driver's seat.

My curiosity was far too strong, so I slipped out of the hospital lobby to get a closer look. To my astonishment, a baby was...

A SEAMSTRESS’S LIFE - AROUND THE FRAME

Details Ginger’s Grandmother Caroline Katherine Koeppen (Knapp) Nassal, at age 4 and 76 with samples of her sewing skills at ages 4-11.

Every so often I am asked if I teach. I prefer to do one-on-one teaching much like how I learned to embroider from my mother, giving my pupil my full attention and allowing them to learn what they want to learn at their own speed and as their schedule allow. Such was the way young girls learned essential sewing skills from their mothers or mother-figure.

A few months ago Ginger Paul visited the BAQ studio with the most extraordinary sewing samples made by her paternal grandmother Caroline...
