Stuck in a week with nothing good to see, I took a chance on a movie I would never go to if it weren't for this column: The Purge: Anarchy. While the violence was less gratuitous than I anticipated, there was more social commentary than I expected. Whether from her days as Sookie on Gilmore Girls or her Oscar-nominated role in Bridesmaids, many people have become big Melissa McCarthy fans. Her over-the-top characters and knack for physical comedy have produced a string of box-office hits including this summer's Tammy. Every now and then when I check the movie listings, I see a movie that I had never heard of before. Maybe I missed the trailers or maybe the marketing budget was tiny, but Chef was completely off my radar.
