I am growing up in a world in which there is a different magic pill for any ailment or problem I may have. If I'm sad, I could be prescribed Prozac. If I can't concentrate, my doctor could give me Ritalin. For any sort of anxiety, I could be given Zoloft (the one with the cute little depressed bubble). It is remarkable and somewhat incomprehensible how many health professionals seem to think that if a kid isn't feeling 100 percent normal, a little white capsule will fix everything. My...

THOSE WIZARD USHERS

One of the pluses when you attend a Wizards game is you get a chance to talk to the many stadium ushers. They are very friendly and quite knowledgeable about baseball. There are many, and a few that come to mind are: Vern Doehrman, Connie Bricker, Tony Ahvens, Peggy Collins, Jim Millhouse and (pictured above) Bill and Nancy McCleary.

Reflections on Poverty

Now that I've got your attention...

Jesus said, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:3 NRSV).

The word for "poor" in the Greek of the New Testament is the word ptochoi, which means one who is a pauper. This is language we don't use everyday, when we...

For some reason really weird movies have had really big success this summer. Case in point: Napoleon Dynamite.

This bizarre movie about one of the biggest nerds you will ever meet is a hilarious comeback for the "loser movie." Napoleon Dynamite (Jon Heder) is a teenager who still obsesses over unicorns and other magical creatures. He can't get a girl, he can't get a car, and he just can't seem to get his grandma's llama to eat when he feeds her. Napoleon lives with his grandmother and his...

Reflections on Stewardship

"The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; {2} for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters." (Psalms 24:1-2 NIV)
Many Christian congregations are working toward a new budget for 2005. For many people, a church budget is a way to "pay the bills." But, in truth, a congregation's budget is much, much more. A budget is a means to finance the dreams that God has given to a congregation, so that not only...

My family and I moved to Fort Wayne from Birmingham, Alabama about three months ago. This includes my wife, six children, and my elderly parents. We bought a house in the Arcola community. I moved here to assume the pastoral care of Fort Wayne Primitive Baptist Church, located on Nuttman Avenue adjacent to the new Brooklyn Medical Associates building, which is under construction. The church was constituted in the early 1920's but has never had a full time pastor before me. In the early...
