AT THE MOVIES WITH KASEY BUTCHER

Details

When I first saw previews for The Emperor's Club, I thought that its creators were ripping off The Dead Poets Society(1989). However, I expected to like the movie. I thought that it was going to be one of those warm, fuzzy films that are so chocked full of inspiration that I leave the theater wanting to go out and change the world. On top of that, my friends and I were looking forward to the prospect of watching teenage guys in uniform. An hour and 49 minutes later I exited the theater feeling...

At the Feeder,

As a Waynedale resident I admire the various forms of wild life in our community, especially the birds that frequent my back yard feeders. On any given day, our lawn fills with birds of every size and description. Cardinals, finches, Juncos but I especially love the sparrows. I know what you're thinking sparrows? Yuck! They're messy and noisy and NUMEROUS! They take without asking, they aren't pretty and their song is "cheap". Sparrows aren't very spectacular, I'll give you...

Life Is Like a Big Hunt

Last week my sons, Greg, Kevin, and I went to Montana to hunt for mule deer and elk. Two other men in the camp were from PA. Greg, Kevin and I, of course wanted to get as large an animal as possible but, to get a decent size one was better than waiting for the largest and not getting any at all.

Dear E. C.,

Thank you for forwarding this letter honey; it made my day. I'm so glad that I've pleased at least one person.

Oooooohhh I just have to tell you what has gone on since my last column. Wayne and I have healed up nicely thank you so very much. I think the cards and letters we received from you good folks in Waynedale and the surrounding area helped. Bobby Stark even got a concerned phone call from California inquiring as to the state of our health. It was from a widower who was awestruck with my picture at the head of my column I guess; he just wanted to know how Wayne and I were getting along and he...

Details Baseball’s Commemorative Stamp Issued In 1939

Baseball During The Civil War

The other day I came across a book titled "From Pastime to Passion, Baseball and the Civil War" by Patricia Millan. In her book she states that some baseball was played between regiments during the war but a holiday feast, letter or package from home got priority over a baseball game.

You see baseball told us with a baseball commemorative postage stamp issued 6/12/39 that Abner Doubleday (1819-1893) founded baseball at Cooperstown in 1839. Research later...
