Life Is Like a Big Hunt

Last week my sons, Greg, Kevin, and I went to Montana to hunt for mule deer and elk. Two other men in the camp were from PA. Greg, Kevin and I, of course wanted to get as large an animal as possible but, to get a decent size one was better than waiting for the largest and not getting any at all.

The first day out I spotted what was to me the largest one I had ever been close to. The buck walked out in the clearing for me to have a shot. I took it, and got my...

Mrs. Wayne N. Dale

(Via E.C. Mills, Bluffton Road),

Dear E.C.,

I would like to thank you for the newspaper clipping about my restaurant in THE WAYNEDALE NEWS. It was a little uplift that I needed at this time. Thanks again.

Dear E. C.,

Thank you for forwarding this letter honey; it made my day. I'm so glad that I've pleased at least one person.

Oooooohhh I just have to tell you what has gone on since my last column. Wayne and I have healed up nicely thank you so very much. It was from a widower who was awestruck with my picture at the head of my column I guess; he just wanted to know how Wayne and I were getting along and he...

Baseball’s Commemorative Stamp Issued In 1939

Baseball During The Civil War

The other day I came across a book titled "From Pastime to Passion, Baseball and the Civil War" by Patricia Millan. In her book she states that some baseball was played between regiments during the war but a holiday feast, letter or package from home got priority over a baseball game.

You see baseball told us with a baseball commemorative postage stamp issued 6/12/39 that Abner Doubleday (1819-1893) founded baseball at Cooperstown in 1839. Research later...

Christmas comes earlier and earlier every year. The stores put out their holiday displays before Halloween. The toy catalogues start coming before Thanksgiving, and this year so did the holiday movies. I'm usually opposed to this sort of commercial, extend the season to extend the profit type of Yuletide hype. However, if it always came in the form of a really cute family movie, I suppose it wouldn't be so bad. The Santa Clause 2, starring Tim Allen (Joe Somebody, Home Improvement), was so...

Food of Love

The parades are great and the ball games are indispensable but Thanksgiving is all about the food. For Thanksgiving most of us want what our forefathers ate and we want it prepared the way our Grandmothers cooked it. Preparing such a meal is a labor of love. If you have someone willing to turn mere groceries into a feast for you this year, or if you have someone for whom you are willing to prepare a feast, than you most definitely have reason to give thanks. Even if you have no...
