EVERYDAY SABBATH: The Art of Real-Life Rest by Judy Braddy
Beacon Hill Press

190 pages, $14.99

In Exodus 33:14, God says, "I will give you rest." Are everyday mindsets hindering Sabbath rest? Judy Brady, armed with the Word, tackles exhausting attitudes and practices to usher spiritual relaxation into the Sabbath and every other day of the week.

Braddy's message is much-needed in our busy culture. She strongly advocates that practicing a weekly Sabbath, though not necessarily on a Sunday, is essential to function physically, as well as mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Daily, monthly, and yearly rest intervals are also encouraged, and she presents plans for retreats, vacations, and sabbaticals. Braddy, who has written several books, illustrates personal examples from her pursuit of Sabbath rest, freely admitting that people with family and career obligations, as well as financial pressures, can feel compelled to become workaholics. She points out that Jesus regularly went into the mountains or the desert or by the sea to rest and pray, despite the demands on his time.

Although the target readership for this book is middle-aged and older adults, the lessons are applicable to all over-achievers.
