BAD PREDICTIONS - GOOD FOR GARDENERS

Details
Text Size:

Doug Hackbarth - Broadview Florist & GreenhouseOriginally the weather forecast for last weekend called for rain with lows in the low 40s. We were so lucky that time that they were wrong. Instead we are getting perfect highs in the 70s with lows only dipping into the low 50s and no rain at all, what a break for gardeners.

The reason for this was the unusual push of warm weather from the south which had kept the cold, rainy weather to our west and northwest.

So is it safe to plant now? Is frost-free weather here to stay? The answers to those questions, as always is that the weather is unpredictable. The facts are that it is still early, it is not "after Mother's Day" yet. Anything can happen so it's simply a matter of your "gut feeling". Why must you feel the need to do all of your gardening at one time?

The best advice is to plant cold tolerant plants first, then plant warm loving plants later. You can always risk a few tomatoes and peppers now with the idea of planting more later when the warm weather becomes a sure thing.

Oh, and don't forget Mom! This weekend is Mother's Day. Take her out to lunch/dinner, or take her shopping, buy her flowers or let her pick something out for herself. Make it a great day for mom!
