HATS, GLOVES, SCARVES ARE NEEDED FOR FWCS STUDENTS

Winter is coming, but many children do not have hats, gloves or mittens and scarves to keep them warm. You can see them on many cold mornings waiting on buses wearing nothing on their heads or hands, but you can help.

Heritage Park is holding a drive for these items to benefit many of the 31,000 students who attend Fort Wayne Community Schools. The community is encouraged to support this drive by donating and bringing these items to Heritage Park, 2001 Hobson Road.

Donations are being accepted from November 25 to December 20 at Heritage Park, where barrels will be accessible to deposit your gift of warmth. The items should be new and are needed for students in grades kindergarten through high school.

The need is dire. Child poverty in Indiana has been on the rise. Officials believe that is because of an increase in the number of children born into single-parent families, the loss of manufacturing jobs, and the influx of immigrants who often start their residency working at lower-wage jobs. About two-thirds of Fort Wayne Community Schools students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals, an indicator of poverty.

Additionally, normal winter weather is expected this winter, which means seasonal cold and snow until spring, according to weather forecasters.
