Last season, the Grinch almost stole the Headwaters Park Ice Skating Rink. On December 21, 2012, the refrigeration unit broke down. After ten years of service, it was beyond repair. The Headwaters Park Alliance spent $20,000 to lease a unit for the rest of the season, but several days of operation were lost around the Christmas Holiday. That will not happen again this year.
Thanks to many donors, the Alliance has purchased a new chiller. A Trane packaged chiller with new pumps, compressors, valves, and an extended warranty, will help with opening the 11th ice skating season on Friday, November 22 at 5 PM. The Trane unit is manufactured in the United States and sold and serviced in Fort Wayne. It will keep the ice intact when temperatures rise, and its extended capacity allows to expand the rink in the future and perhaps extend the season by a few weeks.
The purchase of this Trane Refrigeration Unit is another example of the public/private partnership that has been associated with Headwaters Park for over 20 years. As with the design, building, and management of the park, purchase of the unit is a combination of public and private dollars. The Alliance wishes to thank the following donors who made this possible:
English, Bonter, Mitchell Foundation, McMillen Foundation, Waterfield Foundation, Fort Wayne Christmas Bureau, Jim and Judy Zehner, an anonymous donor, the Fort Wayne Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Headwaters Park Alliance. Private donations paid for over 75% of this project.
The Alliance also wishes to thank the Lincoln Financial Group, the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne, the Auer Foundation, and PNC Trusts for their ongoing support for the ice rink. Thanks to our corporate season sponsor, the Lincoln Financial Group, they will offer free skating during our season opening all evening from 5 to 10 PM on Friday, November 22. The rink is scheduled to close for the season on Sunday, March 2, 2014. It will reopen again in November 2014. To date, over 212,000 skaters have enjoyed the rink since it was first opened in November 2003.
