On July 12th, the State closed the books for Fiscal Year 2004. According to official figures released by the State Budget Agency, Indiana is expected to have a "surplus", or reserve, of just $300 million dollars on June 30, 2005—the close of the budget cycle we have just begun. This means the reserve will have declined by nearly $2 billion since 1998!

On Wednesday, August 18, members of our fire, police and emergency service providers were called into action for an incident that closed Fort Wayne International Airport. While most people were still sleeping, these first responders were making decisions to ensure the safety of our community. Ten hours later, the airport reopened, and life returned to normal with a sigh of relief that a major catastrophe had been averted.

I'm concerned about the future of the local VA Hospital. The federal government recently decided to shut down the inpatient beds at the VA. This decision was based at least in part on data regarding current utilization of those inpatient beds. For years veterans have been told not to go to the VA emergency room if they are ill and they have been discouraged from utilizing the VA Hospital for inpatient care; that fact has obviously affected the VA's statistics. Greetings! I hope you've had a great summer! Things have been fairly quiet in the 4th District (which extends from the airport on the south to Goshen Road on the north and Covington Shopping Center on the west to the West Central area on the east) this summer.
