November 1st was a fantastic day here at the Wayne Township Trustee office! It was our third time in a row we hosted the annual Veterans Stand Down and Healthy Cities Health Fair. It was certainly our best year ever, as about 600 people came through the doors to receive a variety of free services - which included dental and vision exams; bone density tests; blood pressure checks; tests for HIV, syphilis, Hepatitis B, and TB; blood sugar & cholesterol checks, sickle cell tests; depression screenings; cancer screenings; and immunizations for flu, pneumonia, and tetanus. People could also receive free haircuts, free lunch, and free winter clothing (including coats) and blankets. Last year, we served around 300 people!

This event is truly an amazing sight to see because it shows the giving nature of our community. Private citizens from IPFW, Ash Brokerage Corp., IVY Tech, UAW locals, and VFW Posts donated enough used winter clothing and coats that our tent was filled to capacity - and it was forty feet long!

The Allen County Council of Veterans presented me with an award to show their appreciation for the efforts Wayne Township makes in helping veterans. They also presented Mr. Hugh Reusser (of the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System) with an award thanking him for his years of dedicated service to veterans in need.

A special thanks also goes to the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation and Parkview Hospital for donating the money necessary to provide many of the health services. The list of people involved is too long to detail here, but you can see our official "thank you" on our website,at www.waynetownship.org.

Also on November 1st, our income eligibility guidelines did go to 125% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, because I know that income does not increase as our winter bills rise. A family of three that earns $1,565 a month or less meets the income eligibility requirement to qualify for Wayne Township Assistance. It is roughly $321 per additional person. If you think you might be eligible, call our office or check out the guidelines on the website.
